On a night that finally felt like football season, weather-wise, the Warren Lumberjacks traveled to Star City to play the second conference game of the 2019 season. In a rather long and exhaustive game, Warren won 35-21 to bounce back from a close loss the week before. Several players who sat out the Crossett game with injuries returned and made a big difference in the outcome.

Warren won the toss and took the football returning the kick-off to their own 36-yard line. With 10:35 remaining in the first quarter, Riley Cornish hit Vincent Steppes with a 50-yard touchdown pass and Jesus Tinoco made the PAT and Warren led 7-0. Star City took the ensuing kick off at their own 23 and began a drive. Warren's defense helped them twice with offsides penalties but had Star City stopped when pass interference was called. To say the least, it was controversial, but it kept the drive alive and the Bulldogs scored on a two-yard run and tied the game with the extra point. The Lumberjacks took the next kick off and began at their own 25. The Jacks were forced to punt. Star City moved the ball but Warren stopped them at the Warren 17. Cornish hit Christian Calhoun on a deep pass inside Bulldog territory. Cornish then hit Jett Reep for a 12-yard touchdown and Tinoco made the score 14-7. Star City got the ball at the 49. The Warren defense made a stop and the Jacks took over at their own 45. With 5:47 left in the quarter, Cornish passed 27 yards to Calhoun for a score and Tinoco made the point after to make the score 21-7 Warren.

In the second quarter, Star city moved the ball with the help of a targeting penalty against the Jacks and Star City finally scored on a 5-yard run. With the successful PAT the score was Warren 21, Star City 14. The Lumberjacks threatened to score late in the 2nd quarter, but the half ended 21-14.

Warren kicked off to begin the second half and the defense shut Star City down and forced a punt. Jacari Lee returned the punt to the Star City 29 and scored on 4-yard pass from Cornish to J. J. Hampton. Tinoco remained perfect on extra points and Warren was up 28-14. Tinoco's kick off went into the end zone and the Bulldogs took over at their 20. They moved the ball and with 3:12 remaining in the quarter, scored on 7- yard run. The PAT was good and the score was cut to 28-21. After several penalties, Star City kicked off from the Warren 45 yard line but Steppes returned the kick to the Lumberjack 47. The Jacks were moving in to score and fumbled with Star City recovering at their own 29.

Star City moved the ball but the Warren defense stopped them on downs at the Warren 33. With 6:23 left in the game, Cornish threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Steppes and Tinoco made the point after and the Jacks went ahead 35-21. After the Lumberjack kick-off, Star City began a drive but the Lumberjack defense again stepped up and stopped the Dogs on downs at the Warren 48. Warren moved at will and was about to score again before taking a knee as the clock expired. The final score was Warren 35, Star City 21.

Vincent Steppes ran 16 times for 118 yards, caught four passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns and had 84 yards in kickoff returns. He had 336 yards of total offense for the night. Numerous Warren players made plays on defense including Braden Jones, Cedric Calbert, J. J. Hampton, Zander Hemphill, Michael Miranda, Mark Hairston, Kade Weaver, Travon Duncan, and others. The offense line did a good job and protected Cornish as well as opening holes to run. Tre'lon Marshall had a good night. Other players contributed and special teams played well.

Cornish was 16 out of 23 for 276 yards and five touchdowns. Warren ran for 146 yards and threw for 276 for 422 yards of total offense. Star City had 243 yards of offense.

The Lumberjacks are now 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. They will travel to Dumas next Friday night for a 7:00 PM kick off with the Dumas Bobcats.

There was a large and supportive Lumberjacks fan base on hand at Star City and they will be needed again at Dumas.
