After a solid pre-season of work and a scrimmage at McGehee this past Tuesday evening, the Warren Lumberjacks are set to kick off their 2019 campaign in what has become a tradition for the orange and black, a Hooten's Kickoff Classic game, to get the ball rolling on the schedule. Warren will take on Magnolia at SAU this coming week, Tuesday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m.

There has been quite a bit of confusion about the actual start time. Some publications have an incorrect start time, but we would like to reiterate that Warren vs. Magnolia will start at 5:30 p.m.

The Jacks come into this season looking to claim their eighth 8-4A Conference title in a row, a feat that is remarkable in itself. Inside the program, the end goal each season is to be on the field battling for a State Championship in December. Coach Bo Hembree's teams have done that with astonishing consistency over the past 19 years. Since 2000 the Lumberjacks have made seven state title appearances, four of which resulted in the silverware returning home to the trophy cases at Warren High School. In that same period, the Lumberjacks have dominated the 8-4A, with a total of 15 Conference Championships. If that wasn't enough, there has not been a single year during the Hembree era that the orange and black haven't made the playoffs. Let that sink in for a moment. Even when you look at Warren's state championship loses, the margins have been by a combined handful of points, meaning the Jacks have been square in the middle of every game.

Lumberjack fans have had the unique opportunity to watch some of not only the most entertaining football over the last 19 years, but a plethora of talent has poured through the brick gates of Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium. The likes of Reid McKinney, Bret Smith, Roshaun Fellows, Terrance Hampton kicked off the era. They were followed by Ricardo Kemp, Jarius Wright and Greg Childs a few years later. In amongst those names were a great number of other athletes that helped make up those teams that didn't necessarily move on to play at the next level, yet still were outstanding athletes and servants of Warren High School in their own right.

After watching the names above come through the program, it was certainly difficult to see how anyone as talented could show up on campus. However several years ago we watched as a young man named Treylon Burks stepped on to the same field that was home to so many Lumberjack greats. It's not an overstatement to say that we may have very well witnessed one of the greatest, if not the greatest football player to ever come through Warren High School in Burks. He was joined by Warren's Marcus Miller this past season graduating and committing their collegiate careers to the University of Arkansas.

It's interesting that for some of us, Lumberjack history extends beyond the Hembree era in our memories. There were the teams of coaches Tommy Arnold, Ron Brawner, and Marion Glover for people in their thirties and forties. For those in their sixties and seventies, they can recall head coaches such as Mickey O'Quinn, Jamie Raper, and John Morris McGregor. All of these coaches had success in their time, and they all left their mark on the program that continues to this day. Yet, for the young men now donning the axes on their orange helmets, this extremely unique period of Warren Lumberjack Football history, in which there has been an almost continuous and compulsory success, is all they have ever known.

Now, it's their turn. While Treylon Burks and Marcus Miller are gone, there are exciting players to not necessarily fill the void but to create new schemes of attack.

Eyes are on senior running back Vincent Steppes. The 5'9" tailback rushed for over 1,500 yards in 2018. From early indications, this squad will lean on him when push comes to shove. As a standout multi-sport athlete, Steppes is looking to take on a full leadership role this year. His performance in the scrimmage vs. McGehee was superb, with a 45-yard touchdown run early in the ballgame. With a stout offensive line making way, Steppes looks poised to thrust the Lumberjacks toward yet another 8-4A Conference Championship.

Junior wideout Davante Smith looks primed for the limelight as well. From early pre-season action, Smith appears much improved at the skill position, running cleaner routes and portraying a special downfield presence that is hard to coach. His performance against McGehee was perhaps the most notable, as he terrorized the Owl secondary throughout the night.

Warren's offensive line could potentially be it's strongest in years. Senior center Mark Hairston is arriving for his third season at the position. His excellent record snapping the football, along with his 4.0 GPA, make Hairston the baseline leader for Warren in the trenches.

Hairston is joined on the offensive line by senior guard Kade Weaver, who started three games last year before an injury. Another senior, Travon Duncan, is ready to start at guard for his third season as a Jack. It's this senior line that is rounded out by junior Jarrod Villareal and Jacod Duran that could make for a great year offensively for Warren.

Warren's talented slate of receivers continues this season with junior Tre'Lon Marshall, who scored a touchdown in the preseason scrimmage vs. McGehee. Marshall is the type of guy sophomore quarterback Riley Cornish could come to rely on this season more than anyone. He's a playmaker.

Cornish will get his first season as the main man at the helm of Warren's offense, and the staff is excited to see him blossom.

Other receivers Cornish will be looking to connect with include junior Christian Calhoun, senior Braden Jones, junior Clay Barnes, senior Alex Rhoden, senior Josh McClain, junior Weston Hembree, Jecari Lee, and tight end Jett Reep.

Senior kicker Jesus Tinoco has continued his excellence from last season all through spring and summer, and will undoubtedly be one of the best kickers in all of 4A if not the entire State of Arkansas.

The Jacks should be stout once again upfront of the defensive side of the ball, with senior JJ Hampton coming back at noseguard. Michael Miranda and Kade Weaver will also get time on the d-line, alongside Travon Duncan.

Tre'Lon Marshall will return at linebacker and strong safety. Sophomore Zander Hemphill will see playing time at linebacker.

Christian Calhoun is likely to start at corner alongside junior Stone Gorman.

This team is set for another fantastic season, and it should be exciting to watch. They're young in some spots, and the conference is still going to be a challenge with teams like Hamburg, Dumas, Crossett, and Helena West Helena all standing in the Jacks path. You can catch the Lumberjacks in action Tuesday night at SAU against Magnolia. Warren's first home game is set for September 13 vs. Stuttgart.
