Lewis Hamilton passed title rival Sebastian Vettel to take a convincing victory in the United States Grand Prix but will have to wait at least one more race to win his fourth Formula 1 world championship.


Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel led the opening five laps of the 2017 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix,

but it was Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton who went on to dominate the Texan race, winning by 10 seconds from his title rival, whose team mate Kimi Raikkonen clinched third after a last-lap pass on him by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was deemed illegal.




Lewis Hamilton took one look at Sebastian Vettel and decided, in the finest Texan tradition, that this town was not big enough for the both of them.

The Mercedes driver is 66 points clear of Vettel, with only 75 still available in the remaining three races.

Ettel has to make up 17 points on Hamilton in Mexico City to take the fight to the next race in Brazil - which is the equivalent of the German winning the race with Hamilton finishing sixth or lower.



Ever since the United States Grand Prix moved to Austin in 2012, Lewis Hamilton has been the fastest draw in the West, winning five of six races.

Hamilton had to fight for his win - at least at the beginning, after losing the lead to Vettel at the start.
He did not have to chase Vettel down to maintain a strong lead in the championship, but he tracked the Ferrari closely for the next five laps and then passed him for the lead at Turn 12 on lap six.
After taking the lead, Lewis Hamilton did not look back, clearly with a pace advantage, controlling
his pace and doing just enough to manage the race to the end.

The result means Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 Team, secure the 2017 constructors’ crown for the fourth year in a row, but the drivers’ battle goes on to next weekend’s round at the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend.

A five-second time penalty for leaving the track while passing Raikkonen meant the fans’ Driver of the Day Verstappen, who started 16th, lost out on the podium by just 0.9s, having seen his team mate Daniel Ricciardo retire early on with engine issues. Valtteri Bottas ended up fifth in the sister Mercedes, followed by the Force Indias of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez, split by Renault new boy Carlos Sainz, who like Verstappen saw his team mate, Nico Hulkenberg, retire.
Williams’ Felipe Massa and Toro Rosso returnee Daniil Kvyat completed the top ten, the latter’s rookie team mate Brendon Hartley taking the flag 13th on his F1 debut at the Austin Texas F1 circuit.
